Steve McCarthy (born February 3, 1981 in Trail , British Columbia ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who was last under contract with the ZSC Lions in the National League A.
Career
Steve McCarthy began his career as a hockey player in the Western Hockey League , in which he was active from 1996 to 2000 for Edmonton Ice , which had moved to Kootenay in 1998 . With the team renamed Kootenay Ice , he won the President's Cup as WHL champion in the 1999/2000 season . During this time he was selected in the 1999 NHL Entry Draft in the first round as a total of 23 players by the Chicago Blackhawks .
For the Blackhawks, the defender made his debut in the National Hockey League towards the end of the 1999/2000 season , scoring a goal and providing an assist in five games. In the four years in which the defender for the Blackhawks in the NHL, he also came for their farm team , the Norfolk Admirals from the American Hockey League , to missions. During the lockout in the 2004/05 NHL season, the left shooter paused ice hockey. Before resumption of play in the NHL in August 2005 McCarthy was given a third-round draft right in the NHL Entry Draft 2007 to the Vancouver Canucks , which he left again towards the end of the 2005/06 season .
The Canadian was on the ice for the Atlanta Thrashers for the next two and a half seasons , before moving to the then Russian champions Salawat Julajew Ufa in the newly founded Continental Hockey League in summer 2008 . After a year in Europe, he returned to the NHL, where he was signed by the Anaheim Ducks . This transferred him to his ex-team, the Atlanta Thrashers, before the start of the season. The defender spent the 2009/10 season with their farm team, the Chicago Wolves , in the American Hockey League. The Canadian then received a contract with TPS Turku in the SM-liiga . In October 2011, the defender was signed by the ZSC Lions from the National League A after a try-out . After ten games, the Lions extended their contract with the Canadian on November 6, 2011 until the end of the 2011/12 season . On April 17, 2012, he scored the 2-1 winning goal for the ZSC Lions 2.5 seconds before the end of the seventh game of the Swiss playoff final against SC Bern . After his contract was not renewed in the summer of 2012, McCarthy returned to North America and joined the Abbotsford Heat from the American Hockey League. In January 2013, the Canadian was again signed by the ZSC Lions.

For Canada , McCarthy took part in the U20 World Junior Championships in 2000 and 2001 .
