Coaching career

After stepwieser had been an active player in the Kapfenberg Bulls since the club was founded in 1976, he took over the coaching position of the Bundesliga team in 1993 as a supposed “cheap solution”. Stepwieser was previously the general manager of the club's youngsters. In the first season, stepwieser and the team took fifth place in the championship.

In the following years, Stepwieser led the team to the top of the Austrian A-League . In the years 1996 to 1998 he finished third in the championship, in 1999 and 2000 two runner-up titles followed.

In 2001, after beating the Wörthersee Pirates in the final series, he was able to achieve his first championship title as a coach. The title went to Kapfenberg again in 2002, with the Fürstenfeld Panthers being defeated in the final.

In autumn 2002, stepwieser retired to the sporting direction of the Kapfenberg Bulls. His successors were first Toni Vujanic, later Stefan Koch , who led the team to first place in the basic round and then into the final series against Gmunden . After two defeats in this best-of-five final series, the Bulls had their backs to the wall. Stepwieser took over the coaching position again, the Kapfenberg Bulls won the remaining three games and were able to secure the championship title.

In 2004, stepwieser reached the fourth championship in a row with the Bulls, also against Gmunden, who was to remain the last for years. Stepwieser won his first cup title in 2007.

The Bulls were also regularly represented in international competitions under Stepwieser. The best result to date was a third place finish in the Central European Basketball League after winning all six group stage games. This result is also the best placement of an Austrian basketball team in an international competition.

In 2014 he led the Bulls to their second cup win.

In 2015, stepwieser stepped onto the pitch during the semi-final game of his Kapfenberg Bulls at the Güssing Knights, stood in the way of a referee and gesticulated at him and his two colleagues. After he was excluded from the game and a folder wanted to accompany him from the field, he pushed it. For this behavior, stepwieser received a ban of 8 games and a fine of 3500 euros.

In the 2016/17 game year, in which he led the bulls to win the championship title and the cup, stepwieser was awarded the Bundesliga coach of the year for the first time.

At the end of 2017, he left Kapfenberg and moved to the Austrian Basketball Association, where he was General Secretary. From October 2015 he already held the office of ÖBV sports director. In November 2018 he announced that he would be leaving the ÖBV in March 2019 and taking up a job in the private sector.

Activity as national coach

In January 2001 Michael Stepwieser took over the coaching of the Austrian national team in addition to looking after the Kapfenberg Bulls. In his work as national team coach, he won 13 of 28 games. Against Macedonia , he just missed promotion to Division A.
