Tribe of Gypsies is a music group from the USA ( Pacoima , San Fernando Valley ) around guitarist, bassist and producer Roy Z , who is the only one who has belonged to the group since it was founded and who has produced all of the band's albums. The style of the band can be described as hard Latin rock . Because of the blues- influenced Latin American rhythms used, the multiple use of percussion instruments and an organ as well as the solo play by Roy Z, associations with Santana are awakened. However, the music of the Tribe of Gypsies is heavier than that of Santana and influenced more by hard rock . The musicians of the Tribe of Gypsies have on several solo albums of the singer of Iron Maiden , Bruce Dickinson , asked the backing band.

history

The band was founded in 1991 by Roy Z together with singer Robbyn Garcia. Roy Z came up with the idea of doing Latin rock and persuaded his old friend Garcia to join in. Both recorded a five-track demo with the help of a drum computer and bassist friend Patrick Kelly. At this point the group did not yet have a name. A small German record label liked the demo . Roy Z then came up with the band name. After the label had persuaded Roy Z to change the singer, he looked for new musicians. First came bassist Edward (Eddie) Casillas, then drummer David Ingraham. The singers Roy Z wanted, namely Gregory (Gregg) Analla in the first place and Dean Ortega in the second place, he couldn't get. Ultimately, David Young was hired as a singer. The debut album was recorded together with keyboardists Ray Rodriguez and Greg Schultz and percussionists Mario Aguillar and Doug van Booven. Shortly before the album was mixed, Dean Ortega came into the band instead of Young and sang the songs again.

While mixing again, Roy Z met Bruce Dickinson in the studio. Dickinson liked the band's music and befriended Roy Z. Since Dickinson was looking for new ideas, he hired Roy Z as a producer and recorded the album Balls to Picasso with Roy Z, Casillas, Ingraham and van Booven . Aguillar and Ortega also played two songs. This album was - if not under their name - the first release of the Tribe of Gypsies . However, the band did not play Latin rock on it, but - as usual with Dickinson - heavy metal . The band then got the offer to sign a major contract with the Mercury Records label . The band accepted the offer. Various problems at Mercury Records led to the fact that they separated again and the band released their debut album Tribe of Gypsies on the Japanese label JVC / Victor in 1996 . The following year, the EP Nothing Lasts Forever was released , which consisted of songs not used for the debut album, including the title track, another version of which had already been on the demo tape. This song was the first that Roy Z (along with Robbyn Garcia) had written for the band. Then the band separated from singer Ortega and the former preferred candidate Gregg Analla could finally be won as a singer for the band.

Next up were the Dickinson albums Accident of Birth (1997) and The Chemical Wedding (1998), on which Roy Z played guitar, Eddie Casillas bass and David Ingraham drums. Live recordings of Bruce Dickinson and his band from the 1998 tour came out in 1999 under the title Scream for Me Brazil . In 1998 the Tribe of Gypsies also released another album, Revolucion 13 , in which the new singer Gregg Analla and the new second percussionist Elvis Balladares could be heard for the first time. Just a year later, the band's aptly titled Tribe of Gypsies III was released. During the recording of this album, Juan Perez took over the bass from Eddie Casillas and percussionist Mario Aguillar left the group. The album was released again in 2000 under the title Standing on the Shoulders of Giants with two additional titles.

Singer Gregg Analla and drummer David Ingraham left the band during the recording of the next album. In 2003 the singer Chas West and the drummer David Moreno joined the band. The band stopped recording so Bruce Dickinson could record the album Tyranny of Souls , which came out in 2005, with Roy Z, Juan Perez and David Moreno . The following year, Dweller on the Threshold , the band's last album to date, was released, on which the new man Christian Byrne contributed as a further guitarist and bassist.

Since all other albums are now out of stock, apart from the last album, which is only available as an expensive import outside of Japan, the band announced in 2007 that all albums for the American and European market should be reissued. However, this has not yet been the case.
