Mirko Lüdemann (born December 15, 1973 in Weißwasser ) is a former German ice hockey player (defender) who played for the Kölner Haie from 1993 to 2016 and won two German championships , one the ice hockey cup and a Spengler Cup . He was the first player with more than 1,000 appearances in the German ice hockey league and is a DEL record player with a total of 1,197 completed games. He was also a German national player .

Today Lüdemann works for the Kölner Haie in marketing and in youth work.

Career

Mirko Lüdemann's career began at his hometown club Eissport Weißwasser , where the defender went through all youth teams. In 1991, the left shooter moved to Canada and played there for two years in the selection of Fort McMurray in the Alberta Junior Hockey League . In the same year he made his debut in the national team of the German Ice Hockey Federation and competed in the U20 World Cup with the national junior team .

Instead of waiting for an engagement in the North American professional league National Hockey League , Lüdemann decided in the summer of 1993 to return to his home country, where he joined the Cologne EC . With twelve scorer points from 38 games, the defensive player immediately became a regular at the Domstadt team. In the last season before the introduction of the German Ice Hockey League , Lüdemann and the Haien were eliminated in the quarter-finals of the play-offs , but a year later he celebrated his first major success: after victories over Kaufbeuren , Adler Mannheim and Berlin Prussia , he reached with the Cologne team the final against EV Landshut . There the Haie prevailed with 3-2 victories and won their seventh German championship , although the Haie could only occupy sixth place after the preliminary round. It was the first championship in Lüdemann's career.

In the following years Lüdemann established himself as one of the best German defenders in the DEL with excellent scoring values and constant performance. In addition to the runner-up championships with the Haien in 1996 and 2000 and winning the Spengler Cup in 1999, constant assignments for the national team have been one of the highlights of his career to date. In 2002 , the defender celebrated his second championship with the KEC when the Haie won the championship for the second time from sixth place in the table. In 2004 the left shooter announced his resignation from the DEB team in order to be able to concentrate fully on the Kölner Haie. In the 2005/06 season Lüdemann was again the best German defender and had one of the best plus / minus values in the league, and he was the player with the most appearances for the KEC in the semi-finals of the play-offs when he made his 691st game denied and thus replaced Peppi Heiß .

In the following seasons, the native of Saxony was again one of the best defenders and was invited to the DEL All-Star Game in 2007 and 2008 . In the 2007/08 season Lüdemann reached the final of the play-offs with the Haien, which however was lost with 1: 3 games against the Eisbären Berlin . At the beginning of the 2009/10 season , the new coach Igor Pavlov Lüdemann made captain again. He took over the office, which he had already held from 2001 to 2005, from Dave McLlwain , who had ended his sporting career. Although he was still one of the top performers in the Haie team, he was replaced as captain by Christoph Ullmann before the 2010/11 season .

Mirko Lüdemann completed his 800th DEL game against Füchse Duisburg on February 13, 2009 . This made him the second DEL professional after Andreas Renz to have reached the 800 game mark. On February 16, 2011, he completed his 893rd DEL mission and was subsequently the sole record holder of these statistics. On March 8, 2011, he completed his 900th DEL game against the Eisbären Berlin in the local Lanxess Arena. At this point Lüdemann had scored 483 points (161 goals) for the Haie. Towards the end of the main round in 2010/2011, Lüdemann's expiring contract was extended for another two years.

After Mirko Lüdemann had completed his 950th DEL game for the KEC in the main round match against the Straubing Tigers in the 2011/12 DEL season on February 24, 2012, he set another record at the end of the season: in the last DEL main round match of the 2011/12 season on March 11, 2012 Lüdemann played his 1000th competitive game (Bundesliga / DEL) for the Kölner Haie against the Eisbären Berlin. On February 24, 2013, Mirko Lüdemann was the first player to play his 1000th competitive game in the DEL against the Straubing Tigers. Thus, he is also the sole record player of the Kölner Haie, as he played all 1000 competitive games for the KEC.

On April 11, 2016, Lüdemann announced the end of his playing career. He stayed with the Haie and took on activities in marketing and in the youth sector.

On September 24, 2016, his farewell game took place in the Lanxess Arena . In front of 12,012 spectators, his club, the fans and various well-wishers recorded by video message said goodbye to him. To honor his extraordinary achievements, his shirt number 12 will no longer be awarded for the Haien.

International

In the dress of the DEB selection , Mirko Lüdemann scored 13 goals in 132 games, including the decisive goal for the 2002 Olympic qualification for Salt Lake City . The defender participated in the A-World Championships 1994 to 1997 , 2001 , 2003 and 2004 , the B-World Championship in 1999 as well as the Olympic Games in 1994 , 1998 and 2002 and the World Cup in 2004 . After differences with the then national coach Greg Poss , Lüdemann resigned from the national team on his own initiative. Even the new coach Uwe Krupp could not persuade him to make a comeback in the DEB selection.

Records

Lüdemann is the player with the most scorer points (538), games (1,199), assists (362) as well as the second most goals (176) and fourth most penalty minutes (707) of the Haie since its existence in the DEL. Lüdemann was runner-up with the Haien six times (1996, 2000, 2003, 2008, 2013 and 2014), which is a DEL record and reached the DEL final eight times. Furthermore, he is the player with the most games, five-most assists and eleven-most scorer points since the DEL was founded.
