Tommy Söderström (born July 17, 1969 in Stockholm ) is a former Swedish ice hockey goalkeeper who played for the Philadelphia Flyers and New York Islanders in the National Hockey League from 1987 to 2000 .

Career

Tommy Söderström began his career as an ice hockey player in his hometown in the youth department of Djurgårdens IF , with whose professional team he was in the squad for the first time during the 1987/88 season in the Elitserien , but was still without use. He spent the following season at Nacka HK in Division 1, which was still second class at the time . The goalkeeper then returned to Djurgårdens IF, with whom he won the Swedish championship title in the 1989/90 and 1990/91 seasons . In the 1991/92 season he was also runner-up with his team. He was also very successful personally during this period. In 1991 and 1992 he had the lowest average goal conceded of the Elitserien. He was also voted Elitserien Rookie of the Year in 1991 .

From 1992 to 1994 Söderström played for the Philadelphia Flyers in the National Hockey League , which had selected him in the 1990 NHL Entry Draft in the eleventh round as a total of 214 players. During his time with the Flyers, he played a total of 16 games for their farm team Hershey Bears in the American Hockey League . On September 22, 1994, he was transferred to the New York Islanders in exchange for Ron Hextall and a six- round vote for the 1995 NHL Entry Draft , where he spent the following three NHL seasons. During his time with the Islanders, he was parallel in some games with the Rochester Americans in the American Hockey League and the Utah Grizzlies in the International Hockey League between the posts. Most recently he played again from 1997 to 2010 for his home club Djurgårdens IF, with whom he was runner- up in the 1997/98 season. During the season he had the lowest average goals against goals in the league and the best catch rate. He was also awarded the Guldhjälmen as Elitserien Player of the Year. After winning the championship in the 1999/2000 season , the long-time national player ended his career at the age of 31.

International

For Sweden Söderström took part in the junior division in the U18 European Junior Championship in 1987 and the U20 World Junior Championship in 1989 . At the U18 European Championship in 1987 he won the gold medal with his team and the silver medal at the 1989 World Cup. Especially at the U18 European Championship, he was able to convince when he was chosen both the best goalkeeper of the tournament and in its All-Star Team.

In the senior sector, he was in his country's squad at the 1991 , 1992 and 1993 World Championships , as well as the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville and 1998 in Nagano .
