The 1987/88 Elitserien season was the 13th season of the Swedish Elitserien . Färjestad BK became Swedish champions for the third time in the club's history , while Väsby IK was relegated to the second division.

Regular season

mode

The mode has been fundamentally changed in contrast to previous years. The league was increased by two teams to twelve participants. First there was a main round with a home and away leg, in which each of the twelve teams played 22 games. Then the last two in the Allsvenskan had to compete against the best teams in the second division to stay in the league, while the other ten teams played a further 18 games (each game against every other opponent), with the results from previous matches being adopted . The eight best teams then qualified for the play-offs, while the playing time for the last two of the continuation round was over. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
