The 1948/49 season was the fifth season of Division 1 as the highest Swedish ice hockey division . Champion Hammarby IF . Leksands IF , Mora IK , Västerås IK and Surahammars IF relegated to the second division.

In the main round, the league was divided into two groups (North and South). Each of the six teams per group played a total of ten games. The two group winners met in the championship final. The last two in each group were relegated directly to the second division. Each team received two points for a win, one point for a draw and zero points for a defeat.
