Mats Erik Mikael Lusth (born May 20, 1962 in Sweden ) is a former Swedish ice hockey player and current coach who has been the head coach of the Malmö Redhawks from HockeyAllsvenskan since 2013 .
Career
Mats Lusth began his career as a hockey player at Mora IK , for whom he played from 1979 to 1983 in Division 1 , which was still second class at the time . Then the defender received a contract with Färjestad BK from the Elitserien (SEL), the highest Swedish ice hockey league. In the five years that Lusth was on the ice for Färjestad, he and his team won two championships (1986 and 1988). After his second league title with Färjestad, Lusth moved to Malmö IF in the second division in 1988 , with whom he made promotion to the Elitserien in the 1989/90 season. Only two years later, Lusth became Swedish champions with the team.
After Lusth had spent another season at Malmö, the Grasshopper Club Zürich signed the Swedes for the 1993/94 season from the National League B , the second Swiss league. After this stay abroad, Lusth returned to his Swedish homeland, where he was initially under contract for one season each with Leksands IF and VIK Västerås HK , before playing for his ex-club, Malmö IF, from 1996 to 2000. Lusth finally ended his career as a player after the 2000/01 season, in which he ran up for Mora IK in the Allsvenskan , where he had started his career in 1979.
After the end of his career as a player, Lusth initially worked as an assistant coach for the Malmö Redhawks before he was head coach for the Italian first division club HC Alleghe in the 2006/07 season . In the summer of 2007 he took over the post of head coach at the Brûleurs de Loups de Grenoble from the French Ligue Magnus and succeeded Gérald Guennelon, who had won the championship with the Brûleurs in the previous season. With the team, he managed the double of Trophée des Champions and Coupe de France as head coach in his first season . In the 2008/09 season, Lusth and his team won all four national competitions - the championship title , the Coupe de France, the Coupe de la Ligue and the Trophée des Champions. For the 2010/11 season he was hired as head coach of the Frisk Tigers from the GET leagues . For the following season he accepted an offer from the Swedish third division club Olofström IK . After a year he was committed by the second division team Malmö Redhawks, where he was initially active for one season as an assistant coach and was then promoted to head coach.
