Josef Boumedienne (born January 12, 1978 in Stockholm ) is a Finnish - Swedish ice hockey player who was active in the course of his career for the New Jersey Devils , Tampa Bay Lightning and Washington Capitals in the National Hockey League as well as for various clubs of European top ice hockey xligan . Since July 2013 he has been European Scout for the Columbus Blue Jackets . He is the son of an Algerian and a Finnish woman.
Career
Josef Boumedienne began his career as a hockey player at Huddinge IK , for which he was active until 1996. He was then selected in the NHL Entry Draft in 1996 in the fourth round as a total of 91st player by the New Jersey Devils . Initially, however, the defender played two seasons each for Södertälje SK from the Swedish Elitserien and Tappara Tampere from the Finnish SM-liiga . Before the 2000/01 season, Boumedienne was added to the roster of New Jersey's farm team , the Albany River Rats of the American Hockey League . In the following season he made his debut in the National Hockey League for the Devils, before he was given to the Tampa Bay Lightning during the season .
From 2002 to 2004 Boumedienne was under contract with the Washington Capitals before he returned to Europe for the 2004/05 season , where he played in Sweden for Brynäs IF and in Finland for Kärpät Oulu , winning the Finnish championship with Kärpät . After a season with the ZSC Lions from the Swiss National League A and his former Swedish club Södertälje SK , Boumedienne returned to Kärpät Oulu for the 2006/07 season , where he and the team became Finnish champions for the second time in his career.
It followed a year with the Hershey Bears from the American Hockey League , after which he was taken on August 18, 2008 by the Toronto Maple Leafs from the NHL as a free agent under contract, in which he could not, however, prevail. Since he only played for their farm team, the Toronto Marlies from the AHL, he returned to Kärpät Oulu for the third time during the season. In June 2009 he was signed by HK Dinamo Minsk from the KHL and completed 17 KHL games for Dinamo before his contract was terminated. On January 5, 2010, EV Zug finally took him under contract from the Swiss National League A , in which he remained until the end of the season. For the 2010/11 season he moved to Djurgårdens IF from the Elitserien, for which he played until January 2012. He then worked for Jokerit in the SM-liiga and took third place in the 2011/12 championship with this club.
End of May 2012 Boumedienne received a contract with the new KHL participant HC Slovan Bratislava , for whom he played until mid-December of that year. He was then without a club before he returned to Kärpät in mid-January 2013.
After the end of the 2012/13 season he ended his career and was signed as a European Scout by the Columbus Blue Jackets .
International
For Sweden Boumedienne took part in the U18 Junior European Championship in 1996 and the U20 Junior World Championship in 1997 and 1998 . At the U18 European Championships in 1996 he won the bronze medal.
In the senior division, he was used in three international matches during the 2005/06 season.
