Call for elections by the authorities in Ouagadougou

The parliamentary elections in Burkina Faso took place on December 2, 2012 at the same time as the local elections in the West African state of Burkina Faso . The election ended with the victory of the country's ruling party, Congrès pour la democratie et le progrès , which had ruled the country since 1987 and won 70 of the 127 seats in the National Assembly of Burkina Faso .

Electoral process

More than 3000 candidates and 74 parties competed for the 127 seats, which were allocated on the principle of proportional representation, with a nationwide "constituency" (referred to in the table as "national seats") with 16 seats to be won and 45 regional electoral districts was chosen with 2 to 9 seats to be won.

Results

Despite the loss of 3 seats, the parliamentary election confirmed the dominant position of the previous and current ruling party, Congrès pour la démocratie et le progrès , which won 70 out of 127 seats with almost 50% of the votes. The - just now - strongest opposition party, Alliance pour la Démocratie et la Fédération - Rassemblement Démocratique Africain , received 11% of the votes with a slight gain. The oppositional Union pour le Progrès et le Changement , founded in 2010, was almost on par . No other party achieved a double-digit percentage result. 63 of the 74 participating parties received less than 1% of the votes, in their majority they even received less than 0.1% each and are therefore not listed in the following table. Three of these small parties were able to win one seat each in a regional electoral district.

Factions

The parliamentary groups in the National Assembly of Burkina Faso after the parliamentary elections in 2012

As is customary in many parliaments, the elected members of the National Assembly of Burkina Faso are not organized into parties, but as parliamentary groups . The large parties form their own parliamentary groups, the representatives of the small parties either join an existing parliamentary group or together form their own parliamentary group, which meets the minimum requirements of ten members. In the wake of the parliamentary elections in 2012, five political groups were formed. As the graphic below shows, the formation of factions has no influence on the actual balance of power; the CDP remains dominant with an absolute majority.
