Presidential election in Burkina Faso 2015
On November 29, 2015, presidential elections were held in the West African state of Burkina Faso . On the same day, the citizens of the country were called to elect a new parliament . The election was considered the first in several decades where the outcome was completely open. In the first ballot, Roch Marc Kaboré received an absolute majority of almost 53.5%.
prehistory
Just over a year before the election, in October 2014 , President Blaise Compaoré , who originally came to power in a coup in 1987 and was later elected four times, sought to run for a fifth time through a constitutional amendment in 2015. Large-scale protests led to the intervention of the military , which dissolved parliament, ousted the government and forced Compaoré to resign. The following regulation under Michel Kafando as interim president and Isaac Zida as interim premier was planned from the outset for a period of one year. Then new elections should take place, which should enable a return to democratic order. The deadline was October 11, 2015. In mid-September 2015, the presidential guard, which was scheduled to be dissolved, rose and deposed the state leadership. The coup failed after a week, and the election date was finally postponed to November 29th.
