Presidential election in Burkina Faso 2010

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The presidential election in Burkina Faso 2010 took place on November 21, 2010 in the West African state of Burkina Faso . The incumbent President Blaise Compaoré won the election with more than 80% of all votes cast and thus even increased a few fractions of a percentage compared to the 2005 presidential election . Compaoré has ruled Burkina Faso unchallenged since a military coup against then President Thomas Sankara in 1987. Since the introduction of the multi-party system in 1991, he has won every presidential election without encountering any serious opposition, and this generally expected result has been confirmed for a fourth term. In the run-up, it was less the foreseeable victory of the president than the amount of voter turnout under these conditions that was open . Not even half of the country's approximately 7 million eligible voters had registered to vote.

The candidate with the next highest number of votes was former Foreign Minister Hama Arba Diallo , who received 8.2% of the vote. Opposition parties complained that the voter cards only listed the surname and date of birth, which in Burkina Faso, where a large number of people have the same surname, enables massive electoral fraud.
