La-Todin (also La Todin or La Toden) is a department and at the same time a municipality (commune rurale) encompassing the same area in the West African Republic of Burkina Faso . La-Todin is located about 130 kilometers northwest of the Burkinabe capital Ouagadougou .

population

In the census of March 1998, around 7,000 inhabitants were counted in the village and 25,000 in the La-Todin department. In recent years, however, the population has grown significantly, official estimates assume around 9,000 inhabitants for the capital in 2005.

Mosque in La-Todin

This strong population increase in recent years can be traced back in particular to the return of workers who worked for years on plantations in the Ivory Coast and who had to flee from September 2002 after the turmoil of war in Ivory Coast.

La-Todin is mostly inhabited by Mossi , but members of other ethnic groups such as the Fulbe have also settled in La-Todin and its surroundings. The population is religiously very heterogeneous, there are both Catholic and Protestant churches as well as mosques in La-Todin.

economy

Most of the population lives from subsistence farming , and millet is usually grown as a staple food . In La-Todin there are several gasoline or diesel powered grain mills, but the millet for everyday use is mostly ground by hand or pounded in traditional mortars . Other agricultural products are maize , shea and some meat, but increasingly also cotton , which, in contrast to other agricultural products, is not produced to meet one's own needs but for sale.

In the center of La-Todin you will find a kiosk, a grocer, a street café and a small restaurant. Daily goods and food are available at the market, which takes place twice a week .

Infrastructure

As the capital of the department, La-Todin has a prefecture, a medical station, a small maternity clinic and a police station. For a long time there was no running water or electricity. The health facilities, the police station, the prefecture and the village square have had electric lighting since the mid-1990s, which is powered by batteries powered by solar cells . In October 2012, La-Todin was connected to the central power grid of Burkina Faso.

Caused by weak rain in the 1990s, the water table in the region around La-Todin fell significantly. To mitigate the threatening water shortage, a small reservoir was created at the end of the 1990s, which ensures the supply of water today. Thanks to numerous pumps , clean drinking water is available in most of La-Todin's quarters, even if walking of up to twenty minutes to the pump is still a daily reality for many La-Todin residents.

administration

Before 2006, La-Todin was administered directly by the Prefect of La-Todin Department. Since the municipal elections on July 22, 2006, La-Todin has its own authorities, consisting of 33 municipal councils and a mayor. 24 municipal councils belong to the ruling Congrès pour la démocratie et le progrès (CDP) in Burkina Faso , eight belong to the Réveil Démocratique des Masses (RDM) and one to the socialist / Sankarist UNIR / MS .

La-Todin has schools for all ages, including a kindergarten with a maximum capacity of 90 children and a high school. The enrollment rate is around 50%.

traffic

La-Todin can be reached via the well-developed N2 national road to Yako , the provincial capital of the Passoré province . From Yako it is only 24 kilometers to the west on the R21 road (bush road, open all year round). Every day buses and smaller bush taxis run directly from Ouagadougou to La-Todin (especially "Air La Todin" and "Air Passoré", but larger bus companies now also stop in La-Todin).
