action

The USA in 1989: Josey Aimes and her children flee the abuse of her husband Sean and return to their hometown in northern Minnesota . She is received with little sympathy in her parents' house. While mother Alice is happy about the return of her daughter and two grandchildren Sammy and Karen and blames her son-in-law's unemployment for the failure of the marriage, Josey's father turns a blind eye to the truth. Hank Aimes thinks it is more likely that his attractive daughter, whose children are from two different fathers, cheated on her husband. As a single mother of two, Josey soon takes a job as a hairdresser to save money for a home of her own. But the pay in the hairdressing salon is below their expectations, while the local iron mines can earn six times as much. Encouraged by her old friend Glory, one of the few women who earn a living underground, Josey decides to follow in her father's footsteps; she also gets a job in a mining company in the Mesabi Iron Range (in the film: Pearson Taconite & Steel).

Josey is soon one of those who have to haul away the iron ore that is blasted out of the rock every day . The work is hard, but the pay is good, and the friendships made in the mines bind families and neighborhoods together. But work in the iron mines has long been dominated by men who, in times of high unemployment, are unwilling to accept that women compete with them for jobs that have become scarce. Josey has adjusted to the tiring and mostly dangerous work, but to withstand the daily harassment and sexual harassment of the male work colleagues is an even greater challenge. Especially Josey's former school friend Bobby is after the young woman. The walls of the women's changing room are smeared with degrading slogans made from excrement . When Josey defends herself against the unfair treatment, she encounters a wall of silence that her female work colleagues do not dare to break, as does Josey's father, who believes that her behavior will only make things worse. Josey's complaint to her employer does not have the desired effect either; it is ignored.

The situation escalates when Bobby tries to rape Josey while at work . She turns to local attorney Bill White, a former ice hockey champion who sees a precedent in the potential lawsuit . Both convince a judge to hear Josey and find more women and men who are willing to sue in court because of the inhumane working atmosphere in the mines. The case turns into the first successful trial for sexual harassment in the United States.

History of origin

Charlize Theron at the 2005 Cold Land premiere at the Toronto Film Festival

The film is loosely based on the book Class Action by Clara Bingham and Laura Leedy Gansler that the case Lois E. Jenson against Eveleth Taconite Co. portrays. Single mother Lois Jenson , who was employed at the EVTAC mine in Eveleth , Minnesota, wrote a complaint to the Minnesota Human Rights Department in 1984 reporting experiences of sexual harassment and humiliation of her male work colleagues after the U.S. government ten years earlier the steel corporations had forced 20 percent of their jobs for women and minority groups. After evaluating the case, Lois Jenson was awarded $ 11,000 in compensation to be paid by her employer, Eveleth Taconite Co. But the company refused to pay and only after 14 years did the case of Lois E. Jenson v Eveleth Taconite Co , which was joined by two other plaintiffs, end up before a US court, which ruled in favor of the plaintiffs and reprimanded the company Not having prevented misconduct by male employees. The case was the first US trial to address the issue of sexual harassment in the workplace . Subsequently, the plaintiffs were awarded a sum of 3.5 million US dollars in 1998, while the long-term litigation costs resulted in a loss of 15 million US dollars for the Eveleth company.

Although the names in Niki Caro's film have been changed, many of the characters in Kaltes Land are based on real people. The shooting took place from February 14th to May 13th, 2005. The film was shot in the US states of New Mexico and Minnesota , including at the original locations in Eveleth, in which the Lois Jenson case took place.

reception

Niki Caro's drama premiered at the Toronto Film Festival on September 12, 2005 . After another screening at the Chicago Film Festival, the film officially opened in US cinemas twelve days later, on October 21, 2005. Kaltes Land grossed 6.4 million US dollars on the opening weekend and stormed to number 5 on the US box office charts.

Critics particularly emphasized the acting performance of Charlize Theron and compared the film with works such as Norma Rae (1978) with Sally Field or Mike Nichols ' Silkwood (1983) with Meryl Streep or Steven Soderbergh's Erin Brockovich (2000) with Julia Roberts .

- NBC TV

"Exceptional directorial work."

- MSN

“Sensitive and thought-provoking. An incredible film. "

- CNN

“Inspirational, honest, infallible acting, genuinely heartfelt and absolutely wonderful. A film that shows greatness. "

- NY Observer

“Powerful and moving. Niki Caro's second film is perfect in every way. "

- Comingsoon.net

“… The director Niki Caro had the story cameraman Chris Menges set in cold-frozen images… The stand up against injustice and the appeal for solidarity would earn the film respect, but no sympathy. This is ensured by the excellent acting ensemble, in which smaller parts are consistently cast by Sean Bean, Michelle Monaghan and the only 14-year-old Thomas Curtis as Josey's son. "

- Ulrike Steiner, OÖN

"The plot gains credibility through the realistic atmosphere, but suffers from the uniformity of the characters and the sentimental ending."
