Summary
The American director Robert Altman and the visual effects expert Gary Demos had already been selected as winners . Altman was unsuccessfully nominated seven times for a regular Academy Award and was honored this year for his creative work with the Honorary Oscar . Gary Demos is a two-time Scientific and Technical Award winner, a Technical Achievement Award winner, and has received the Gordon E. Sawyer Award .
After the nominations were announced on January 31, 2006 by Sid Ganis , President of the Academy, and actress Mira Sorvino , Ang Lee's drama Brokeback Mountain was the big favorite for the 78th Academy Awards with eight nominations. The independent film about the love story of two gay cowboys had already received the Golden Globe Award and the British Academy Film Award (BAFTA Award) in advance . However, Brokeback Mountain couldn't live up to its favorite status on Oscar night . Although the film won three Academy Awards in the categories of best director, best film music and best adapted screenplay, it lost the trophy for best film to Paul Haggis ' ensemble film L.A. Crash , which also won awards in the categories of best original screenplay and best editing . This is the worst result since 1976 , when John G. Avildsen's boxer drama Rocky only won three out of ten nominations for Best Picture of the Year. Peter Jackson's adventure film King Kong and Rob Marshall's adaptation of the novel Die Geisha also received three prizes each , which mainly scored points in the technical categories. In the actor categories, Philip Seymour Hoffman ( Capote ), Reese Witherspoon ( Walk the Line ) , George Clooney ( Syriana ) and Rachel Weisz ( The Eternal Gardener ) were exactly the actors who had already been considered favorites and who won other important film awards, such as the Golden Globe or BAFTA Award, had also largely triumphed.
The losers of the evening were George Clooney's critically acclaimed political drama Good Night, and Good Luck. and Steven Spielberg's controversial production Munich , which despite six or five nominations (including in the categories of Best Film and Director) could not prevail against the competition. The Austrian Hubert Sauper , who was nominated for the best documentary with Darwin's Nightmare , had to leave the award to the French contribution The Journey of the Penguins . The German candidates were also not successful at the 78th Academy Awards. Ulrike Grote was unable to accept a prize for her short film Outlier , which won her a student Oscar in 2005 . Marc Rothemund's multi-award-winning drama Sophie Scholl - Die last Tage , nominated for best foreign production, had to admit defeat to the South African drama Tsotsi . For South Africa it was the first win in this category. The German Michael Ohoven , nominated as one of the producers of Capote , was also not considered in the award. As best animated film was Wallace & Gromit: On the hunt for the giant rabbit excellent. His plasticine protagonists, a quirky inventor and his clever dog, who always bailed out his master when needed, were already featured by Wallace & Gromit - Alles Käse and the animated short films Wallace & Gromit - Die Techno, which received the Oscars in 1993 and 1996 respectively -Hose and Wallace & Gromit - made famous among sheep .
The director of the award ceremony, Louis J. Horvitz , was awarded an Emmy in the category “Directing a variety, music or comedy show” for his directorial work at this award ceremony on August 27, 2006 .
Moderation
As in 2005, the moderator of the award ceremony was a newcomer. This time it was moderated by the 44-year-old late night talker Jon Stewart . At the beginning of the award, a so-called single - player was shown in which some of the previous presenters ( Billy Crystal , Chris Rock , Whoopi Goldberg , David Letterman and Mel Gibson ) refused to present again. Halle Berry and George Clooney could also be seen in this short film .
Musical director
This year, the composer Bill Conti acted as musical director and thus also as conductor of the orchestra, leading the Academy Awards Orchestra for the 18th time . Conti himself has received an Oscar in the Original Score category for "The Right Stuff" and two other nominations in the Original Song category ( "Gonna Fly Now" and "For Your Eyes Only" ).
