The Dolby Theater (until February 2012 Kodak Theater ) is an event and concert hall in Hollywood on Hollywood Boulevard , in which the Oscars (Academy Awards) of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences have been presented since 2002 .

The building, which opened in 2001, was specially constructed for the Oscar awards. It offers up to 3,400 seats, has one of the largest stages in the USA and, behind it, a room specially reserved for the press for 1,500 journalists. The construction was sponsored by the Kodak Company, which at the time paid $ 75 million for the naming rights.

The building is also used for other events outside of the Oscar ceremonies. Musicals and beauty pageants have already been held there, some Emmy awards were also held there, and most of the final rounds of the American Idol talent show . Well-known artists such as Christina Aguilera , Celine Dion , Dixie Chicks , Mariah Carey , Elvis Costello , Vanilla Ice , Barry Manilow , Prince , Ian Anderson , David Gilmour , Frankie Valli and The Four Seasons also had a few appearances there. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama fought a direct televised duel here in the primary campaign for nomination for the Democratic Party's US presidential candidate.

Part of the Hollywood Walk of Fame runs in front of the theater . The star of Muhammad Ali is on the facade of the theater because Ali did not want "people walking around in my name who have no respect for me".

In February 2012, the Kodak Theater lost its name. The reason for the loss of the name was the bankruptcy of the photo material and camera manufacturer. For the 2012 Academy Awards , the name Hollywood & Highland Center was used temporarily , referring to the location of the complex on the corner of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue. On May 1, 2012 it was announced that Dolby Laboratories could be won as a new sponsor and the complex will be renamed the Dolby Theater .
