Norma Rae - Switching Channels is an American film drama directed by Martin Ritt from the year 1979 , based on real events.
action
The factory worker and single mother Norma Rae leads a desolate life in a small town. She got to know the unionist Reuben and realized that she had to fight with the other workers against the poor working conditions and the low wages. She transforms into a consciously politically active woman.
background
The character of Norma Rae is based on Crystal Lee Jordan , who fought for a collective agreement in a textile factory in North Carolina for ten years. Sally Field and Beau Bridges did research for their roles and worked for a while in a similar factory.
The majority of the film extras were students from nearby Auburn University in Opelika, Alabama.
Sally Field was preferred over Jane Fonda , Marsha Mason and Jill Clayburgh to play the title character .
Reviews
In its contemporary criticism, the film-dienst rated Ritt's film as an optimistic, socially critical production “with a melodramatic touch that would convince with the excellent portrayal of the title role” .
