Barbara Baxley

Barbara Angie Rose Baxley (born January 1, 1923 in Porterville , California - † June 7, 1990 in New York City , New York ) was an American actress .

Life

After studying at the College of the Pacific, Baxley received a scholarship from the Neighborhood Playhouse School of Theater in New York, where she was trained by Sanford Meisner . She was one of the first members of the Actors Studio , where she received lessons from Elia Kazan . In 1948 she made her Broadway debut in a production of Noël Cowards Private Lives on the side of Tallulah Bankhead and Donald Cook . By the early 1980s she had numerous engagements on Broadway; she was also on stage off-Broadway and was seen as Isabel in a production of William Shakespeare's Measure for Measure in Central Park in 1966 and as Portia in The Merchant of Venice at the American Shakespeare Festival in Stratford in 1967 . In 1960 she was nominated for a Tony Award for her acting performance in a Broadway production of Tennessee Williams ' Period of Adjustment .

Baxley made her feature film debut in Elia Kazan's Beyond Eden in 1955 as Adam's obnoxious nurse. Perhaps her most important feature film role was in 1975 as Lady Pearl in Robert Altman's Nashville , other notable roles include Leona in Martin Ritt's Norma Rae - A Woman Is Her Husband from 1979 and Shirley in William Peter Blatty's The Exorcist III from 1990. Besides hers Baxley has appeared in film and theater roles in numerous television productions over the course of four decades. She had guest roles on the series Alfred Hitchcock , Hawaii Five-Zero , On the Run , The Streets of San Francisco, and Murder Is Her Hobby, among others .

Baxley was found dead in her Upper West Side apartment in June 1990 , the cause of death believed to be a heart attack.
