The Italian Job - Hunt for Millions is a feature film from the genre of heist movies and a remake by Felix Gary Gray from 2003, based on the Peter Collinson film of the same name , Charlie Dusting Millions (1969, original title: The Italian Job ) based.

action

In Venice , Charlie Croker's well-rehearsed team succeeds in a sensational coup: By blasting the floor under a safe , it falls through two floors into a submerged basement with a direct connection to a canal . While the guards chase the bait speedboat through Venice's old town with Rob at the wheel, the others can recover $ 35 million in gold bars underwater. The team manages to escape, but the joy does not last long, because team member Steve had already decided to deceive the group before the coup. His people stop the escape vehicle and reload the gold bars. Since Steve fears the revenge of the betrayed, he shoots Charlie's mentor John Bridger, a gifted safe cracker. The rest of the team crashes into the ice-cold water with the escape vehicle and is therefore believed to be dead by Steve. Thanks to the diving equipment from the Venice coup, however, they manage to save themselves.

A year later, Charlie followed Steve's lead all the way to Los Angeles and rounded up the remaining team. With the help of Stella, John's daughter, Steve should be relieved of the former booty. At first, Stella is not particularly enthusiastic because she works as a professional safe cracker in the police force and is now supposed to be involved in an illegal company for the first time in her life. She ultimately accepts the offer to avenge her father's death.

Steve used the past year to gradually exchange some of the conspicuously marked Venetian gold bars for cash at a contact from the Ukrainian mafia . He now lives in a luxuriously furnished villa, which is protected by a state-of-the-art security system, guards and dogs.

A long planning phase begins for Charlie and his team. In order to scout out Steve's villa, Stella gets in as a television technician after a fictitious broadcast failure. Steve, clearly taken with her, invites her to dinner in a restaurant one of the next evenings. The gang decides to use this evening for their project. Using three in the chassis reinforced Mini they want to transport the heavy gold charge. But the plan goes wrong. At the planned time of the break-in, Steve's neighbor is having a garden party so that they cannot blow open the gate of the house entrance because of the noise. In order not to be found out, Stella has to meet Steve, her father's murderer. Stella is revealed by Steve as John Bridger's daughter. Charlie therefore decides to call off the robbery. Meanwhile, the angry Steve shoots his Ukrainian mafia contact because he believes he has betrayed himself. He is forced to vacate his house and bring the remaining gold to safety.

The removal of the gold is to take place with one of three identical armored cars, which leave Steve's house at the same time, take different routes and are accompanied by security guards. Steve himself watches the evacuation from the helicopter.

The hacker Lyle, who penetrated the traffic monitoring network in Los Angeles, compares the ground clearance of the three vans on the traffic monitoring cameras . The car with the lowest height is the one loaded with gold. He manipulated the traffic lights and caused a traffic standstill in the city. At the same time, he guides the vehicle to a stretch of road that the explosives expert Left Ear , who was deaf in one ear , has prepared with booby traps. The gold is stolen by the same procedure as in the robbery in Venice: The road under the van is blown away and the vehicle falls a few meters down into a subway shaft, where Charlie and his men are already waiting. Stella opens the safe in the transporter, the gang reloads the gold into the three minis and transports it out of the underground. However, Steve notices this and has the gang pursued by his security guards, but without success. Finally he chases Charlie's Mini with his helicopter, which continues to a train station.

Steve observes that the three Minis are hidden in a freight car. However, when he tries to set up the gang, he gets an unpleasant surprise. Charlie had informed the Ukrainian Mafia about Steve, which is now taking him in to get revenge for the Mafia member killed by Steve, and which also receives a share of the booty. Now Charlie and his friends can take the train to escape in peace. In their compartment they toast John Bridger, who was initially murdered.

After all, every team member has fulfilled his dream with his share of the loot. Rob buys an Aston Martin sports car, the hacker Lyle buys a particularly high-quality stereo system, the explosives expert Left Ear buys a villa in Andalusia with a separate room for his shoes, and Charlie and Stella sit in a gondola in Venice and kiss.

cars

Minis at the premiere of the film

In the three Minis (red vehicle: Mini Cooper S, blue vehicle: Mini Cooper, white vehicle: Mini Cooper) from the remake, some features have been taken over from the three Minis in the original version:

  • Fog lights: Large auxiliary lights, which were already a feature on the Minis from 1969, are also available on the vehicles of the new edition.
  • Color: Both the original and the remake are red, blue and white.
  • Decorative stripes: The stripes running lengthways on the bonnet, which give the car a sporty look, were already in the version from 1969, at that time all black.

In the film, a model similar to the red Mini from the 1969 film adaptation has a "guest appearance" as Stella's car. The chase from the first film is also taken into account with Stella's fast-paced driving style.

Emergence

The remake differs in many elements from its model . In addition to the relocation of the location from Turin to Venice and Los Angeles, the former British occupation was replaced by a predominantly American occupation. Instead of the mafia, a member from their own ranks is now acting against the group. The open ending was deleted - but a sequel called The Brazilian Job has not progressed beyond the planning stage for more than 15 years, despite numerous script drafts.

Thief Lyle claims to be the inventor of Napster . His former roommate Shawn Fanning is said to have stolen the disk with the software. Shawn Fanning himself was available for a cameo to film the flashback .

Mos Def had to take a driver's license test before the actual driver training because, like Michael Caine in the original, he did not have a valid driver's license at the beginning of the shooting .

At the end of the film, one shot of Kelly Brook appears as Lyle's friend. At the time of filming, Kelly Brook was the partner of Jason Statham , who played the beautiful Rob .

Cast and dubbing

The German-language synchronization of the film was done by Berliner Synchron . The author of the dialogue book was Michael Nowka , who also directed the dialogue .
