East of Havana is an American documentary from 2006 , which was produced by Charlize Theron , among others . It was directed by Emilia Menocal and Jauretsi Saizarbitoria , who also wrote the script.

action

The film shows the life of three rappers who are friends and who live in Cuba : Magyori, Mikki and Soandry. You appear as the music group El Cartel . The friends are preparing for the national hip-hop festival in 2004.

Magyori, whose mother is a prostitute, talks about how difficult it is to survive. Mikki shows the filmmakers his outdated stereo system. Soandry's older brother fled to the United States. Soandry laments the marginalization of the politically oriented rapeseed in the USA in the 1990s.

Reviews

Robert Koehler wrote in Variety magazine on July 25, 2006 that the film offers a metaphor about artistic freedom. It should leave a clear mark on cinema and video rental. The camera work corresponds more to the artistic vision of the cameraman than a real documentary.

Michael Ordoña wrote in the Los Angeles Times on March 9, 2007 that the film offers a rare glimpse of everyday Cuban life.

Matt Zoller Seitz described the film in the New York Times on February 1, 2007 as a "revelation" .
