Uladzimir Aljaksejewitsch Arlou ( Belarusian Уладзімір Аляксеевіч Арлоў , also Vladimir Alexeyevich Orlov Russian Владимир Алексеевич Орлов * 25. August 1953 in Polotsk , Belarus ) is a Belarusian historian and poet and the chairman of the Belarusian PEN Club .
Career
Arlou attended secondary school in Polotsk until 1970 and then completed history at the Belarusian State University in Minsk until 1975 . After graduating, he worked as a history teacher at a school in Navapolazk ; from 1976 to 1986 he worked a. a. as editor and correspondent for the newspaper Chimik ( Хімік , dt. "The chemist"). Since 1988 he has been an editor at Mastazkaja Litadela ( Мастацкая літаратура ).
Arlou has been a member of the Belarusian Writers' Union since 1986. In 1988, during the period of perestroika , he joined the Belarusian Popular Front (BNF); In 1989 he left the CPSU. From 1992 he moved into the Belarusian parliament twice as a member of the BNF.
Since 1997, Arlou has worked as a member of the editorial staff of the magazine Krynitsa ( Крыніца )
Arlou's poems have been published since 1976, first in the almanacs Blakitny lichtar ( Блакітны ліхтар ) and Milawiza ( Мілавіца ). In addition to his poems, Arlou translates from Russian, among others. a. a historical-ethnographic work. In 1986 he received an award from the Lenin Komsomol of Belarus for his book Dobry dsen, maja Schypschyna ( Добры дзень, мая Шыпшына ).
Arlou is married and has two sons.
In 2010 he was honored with the literature prize "European Poet of Freedom" (Europejski Poeta Wolności) in Gdansk .
