The Newton County is a county in the US state of Texas . The county seat is in Newton .

The county is located in the far east of Texas on the west bank of the Sabine River , which forms the border with Louisiana . It has an area of 2,433 square kilometers, of which 18 square kilometers are the water surface of the Toledo Bend Reservoir . The following neighboring counties and parishes border Newton County:

Newton County was formed on April 22, 1846 from former parts of Jasper County. The administrative organization was completed on July 13 of the same year. It was named after John Newton (1755-1780), a non-commissioned officer in the American Revolutionary War who served as a sergeant under General Francis Marion . He fought in the Siege of Savannah in 1779. His experiences at the event were later transformed into a popular heroic story by the author Mason Locke Weems . Newton died of smallpox in 1780 as a prisoner of war .

Six structures in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 27, 2020, including the Autrey-Williams House , the Newton County Courthouse, and the Addie L. and AT Odom Homestead .

Demographic data

According to the 2010 census , Newton County had 14,445 people in 5,473 households. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer.

The racial the population was composed of 76.9 percent white, 20.1 percent African American, 0.6 percent Native American, 0.4 percent Asian and other ethnic groups; 1.6 percent were descended from two or more races. Regardless of ethnicity, 2.8 percent of the population was Hispanic or Latino of any race. Statistically, 2.41 people lived in each of the 5,473 households.

23.2 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 60.6 percent were between 18 and 64 and 16.2 percent were 65 years or older. 48.5 percent of the population was female.

The median income for a household was 37,319 USD . The per capita income was $ 17,800. 20.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
