The Wise County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Decatur .

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Texas, about 25 miles from Oklahoma , and has an area of 2390 square kilometers, of which 47 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Montague County , Cooke County , Denton County , Tarrant County , Parker County, and Jack County .

history

Wise County was formed in 1856 from parts of Cooke County. It was named after Henry A. Wise , a member of the US House of Representatives and 38th Governor of Virginia .

According to the 2000 census , Wise County had 48,793 people in 17,178 households and 13,467 families. The population density was 21 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 91.01 percent white, 1.23 percent African American, 0.75 percent Native American, 0.22 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.03 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.71 percent were descended from two or more races. 10.76 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 17,178 households, 38.2 percent had children or young people living with them. 66.1 percent were married, couples living together, 8.2 percent were single mothers and 21.6 percent were non-families. 18.3 percent were single households and 7.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.77 and the average family size was 3.14 people.

28.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.8 percent between 18 and 24, 30.2 percent between 25 and 44, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 99.4 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 41,933 , and the median income for a family is $ 47,909. Males had a median income of $ 35,913 versus $ 23,434 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,729. 7.5 percent of families and 9.9 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
