Crafton (Texas)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Crafton is a place in northwestern Wise County in the US state of Texas . Crafton is located on Farm to Market Road 2127 , approximately 100 km northwest of Fort Worth .

The US colonization of the area previously inhabited by the Comanches began in the late 1870s. The place was named after the settler George R. Craft. In 1878 a post office was opened, churches, a school and a hotel were built. The newspaper publisher Amon G. Carter, who became famous for his support for the city of Fort Worth , was born in Crafton in 1879 . In 1909 the place was destroyed by a tornado and then rebuilt. However, due to the lack of a railway connection and the waning of regional cotton cultivation , the place visibly became deserted. In the 1920s it had 168 inhabitants, 50 in 1950, and in 2000 only 20 people lived in Crafton.
