The Calhoun County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Port Lavaca .

geography

The county is located southwest of the geographic center of Texas and borders the Gulf of Mexico . It has an area of ​​2673 square kilometers, of which 1346 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by Jackson County , Aransas County , Refugio County, and Victoria Counties .

history

Calhoun County was formed in 1846 from parts of Jackson County, Matagorda County, and Victoria County. It was named after John C. Calhoun , the 7th Vice President of the United States.

One of the county's buildings is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of October 16, 2018), the Matagorda Island Lighthouse .

As of the 2000 census , Calhoun County had 20,647 people in 7,442 households and 5,574 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.04 percent white, 2.63 percent African American, 0.49 percent Native American, 3.27 percent Asian, 0.07 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 13.19 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.32 percent were descended from two or more races. 40.92 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 7,442 households, 35.4 percent had children or young people living with them. 59.2 percent were married couples living together, 11.0 percent were single mothers and 25.1 percent were non-families. 21.3 percent were single households and 8.9 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.20 people.

28.5 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 27.3 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 13.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 100.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 99.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 35,849 , and the median  income for a family was $ 39,900. Males had a median income of $ 35,957 versus $ 19,772 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,125. 12.7 percent of families and 16.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
