The Caldwell County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Lockhart .
geography
The county is located southeast of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 1,418 square kilometers, of which 4 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Travis County , Bastrop County , Fayette County , Gonzales County , Guadalupe County, and Hays County .
history
Caldwell County was formed on March 6, 1848 from parts of Bastrop County and Gonzalez Counties and the administrative organization was completed on August 7 of the same year. It was named after Mathew Caldwell (1798-1842), a soldier during the Texas Revolution and commander of the Texas Rangers .
Five buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of October 16, 2018).

As of the 2000 census , Caldwell County had 32,194 people in 10,816 households and 8,079 families. The population density was 23 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.13 percent white, 8.50 percent African American, 0.61 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 17.66 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.74 percent were descended from two or more races. 40.44 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 10,816 households, 37.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 56.0 percent were married couples living together, 13.3 percent were single mothers and 25.3 percent were non-families. 21.2 percent were single households and 9.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.82 and the average family size was 3.28 people.
28.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.5 percent between 18 and 24, 29.8 percent between 25 and 44, 20.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.5 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 97.5 males, and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.7 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 36,573 , and the median income for a family is $ 41,300. Males had a median income of $ 29,295 versus $ 21,595 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,099. 10.4 percent of families and 13.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
