The Dawson County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Lamesa . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas in the Llano Estacado and is approximately 70 km to the west from New Mexico . It has an area of 2336 square kilometers, without any significant water surface. The county is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Lynn County , Borden County , Martin County , Gaines County, and Terry Counties .
history
Dawson County was formed from parts of Bexar County on August 21, 1876 , and the administrative organization was completed on February 13, 1905. It was named after Nicholas Mosby Dawson (1808–1842), an officer in the Texas Army during the Texan Revolution .
One of the county's sites is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of October 24, 2018, the Lamesa Farm Workers Community Historic District .

According to the 2000 census , Dawson County had 14,985 people. Of these, 2,272 lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 4,726 households and 3501 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 72.47 percent white, 8.66 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 0.25 percent Asian and 16.56 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.77 percent were from two or more races. 48.19 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 4,726 households, 35.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 59.4 percent were married couples living together. 11.0 percent were single mothers and 25.9 percent were non-families. 23.9 percent were single households and 13.3 percent of families had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size 3.20.
25.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 30.7 percent between 25 and 44, 20.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 124.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 129.9 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,211 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,745. Males had a median income of $ 27,259 versus $ 16,739 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,011. 16.4 percent of families and 19.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
