Native Americans roamed the area 17,000 years ago.
The real history of the city begins in July 1903 when 160 acres of land were spun off from a ranch . The name is derived from the Spanish mesa , which means table land and describes the plateau pretty well at this point. Of the possible versions La Mesa and Lamesa , the latter was chosen. A little later, the post office was moved from nearby Chicago to Lamesa, and in 1905 the city also became the seat of the county . The residents of Chicago were then offered the move to Lamesa and carried out within two days.
In 1905 there was the first telegraph connection, in 1910 the connection to the railway network by the " Santa Fe Railway Company " and in 1916 electricity was introduced.
