The Cooke County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Gainesville .

geography

The county is located northeast of the geographic center of Texas on the border with Oklahoma and has an area of ​​2328 km², of which 65 km² are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Love County , Oklahoma, Grayson County , Denton County , Wise County, and Montague Counties .

history

Cooke County was formed from parts of Fannin County on March 20, 1848 , and the administrative organization was completed on March 10 of the following year. It was named after William Gordon Cooke , a Quartermaster General in the Texas Army and Texas Rangers during the Texas Revolution .

The Cloud-Stark House is one of eight entries for the county in the NRHP.

Eight structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of October 22, 2018).

According to the 2000 census , Cooke County had 36,363 people in 13,643 households and 10,000 families. The population density was 16 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.84 percent white, 3.06 percent African American, 1.00 percent Native American, 0.34 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.16 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.61 percent were descended from two or more races. 9.97 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 13,643 households, 33.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 59.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.9 percent were single mothers, and 26.7 percent were non-families. 23.3 percent were single households and 11.1 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.07 people.

27.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.7 percent between 18 and 24, 26.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.9 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 97.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 92.8 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 37,649 , and the median income for a family is $ 44,869. Males had a median income of $ 32,429 versus $ 22,065 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,889. 10.9 percent of families and 14.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
