Muenster is a city in Cooke County in the US state of Texas . 1,556 people live in the 3.4 km² city (status: census from 2000).
history
The city was founded in 1889 by the German settlers Carl and Emil Flusche on the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad . At that time it consisted of 25 men, seven women and six children. Other Catholics followed them after advertisements ran in German-language newspapers in the Midwest. The name of the city was actually supposed to be Westphalia , but another city in Texas already had this name. For this reason the settlers named the city after the city of Münster in Westphalia.
German was spoken in the city until the Second World War . Since then, however, the language is no longer taught in schools and hardly spoken any more.
90% of the population are still Catholic and many German customs are still maintained in the city today. Traditional German food can still be bought in the town's shops. There is an annual German festival and a Christmas market in the city.
