The county is located in north Texas, borders Oklahoma to the north and has an area of ​​1,639 square kilometers, of which 14 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Tillman Counties and Cotton Counties , both in Oklahoma, Clay Counties , Archer Counties , and Wilbarger Counties .

history

Wichita County was formed in 1858 from parts of Cooke County . It was named after the Wichita Indian tribe.

According to the 2000 census , Wichita County had 131,664 people in 48,441 households and 32,891 families. The population density was 81 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 78.76 percent white, 10.23 percent African American, 0.89 percent Native American, 1.84 percent Asian, 0.09 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 5.51 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.68 percent were descended from two or more races. 12.23 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 33,780 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,937. Males had a median income of $ 28,687 versus $ 21,885 for females. The per capita income was 16,965. 13.2 percent of the population and 10.3 percent of the families lived below the poverty line.
