The Maverick County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Eagle Pass .

The county is located in south Texas, borders Mexico in the southwest and has an area of ​​3,346 square kilometers, of which 30 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Kinney County and Zavala County .

history

Maverick County was formed on February 2, 1856 from parts of Kinney County. The administrative organization was completed on July 13, 1871. It was named after Samuel A. Maverick , a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and a member of the State Legislature . As a rancher, he didn't brand his cattle, so the name Maverick became synonymous with unmarked cattle and nonconformity.

According to the 2000 census , Maverick County had 47,297 people in 13,089 households and 11,230 families. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.89 percent white, 0.31 percent African American, 1.34 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 24.08 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.95 percent were descended from two or more races. 95.01 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 13,089 households, 51.6 percent had children or adolescents living with them. 66.5 percent were married couples living together, 16.0 percent were single mothers and 14.2 percent were non-families. 12.9 percent were single households, and 6.6 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 3.60 and the average family size was 3.98 people.

36.9 percent of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2 percent between 18 and 24, 26.7 percent between 25 and 44, 17.7 percent between 45 and 64, and 9.5 percent were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 91.9 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 86.4 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $ 21,232 , and the median income for a family was $ 23,614. Males had a median income of $ 20,956 versus $ 15,662 for females. The annual income per capita was $ 8,758. 34.8 percent of the population and 32.0 percent of families lived below the poverty line.
