The Matagorda County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Bay City .

The county is located in southwest Texas on the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of 4176 square kilometers, of which 1289 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Brazoria County , Jackson County, and Wharton Counties .

history

Matagorda County was formed as the original county on March 17, 1836. The administrative organization was completed the following year. It was named after the Spanish word for the reed that grows along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the 2000 census , Matagorda County had 37,957 people in 13,901 households and 9,925 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 67.83 percent white, 12.72 percent African American, 0.67 percent Native American, 2.38 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 13.98 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.38 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.35 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 13,901 households, 36.7 percent had children or young people living with them. 53.8 percent were married couples living together, 12.7 percent were single mothers and 28.6 percent were non-families. 25.1 percent were single households and 10.4 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.25 people.

30.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 21.8 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there are 95.5 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,174 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,586. Males had a median income of $ 37,733 versus $ 21,871 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,709. 14.9 percent of families and 18.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
