The county is located in southwest Texas on the Gulf of Mexico and has an area of ​​4176 square kilometers, of which 1289 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Brazoria County , Jackson County, and Wharton Counties .

history

Matagorda County was formed as the original county on March 17, 1836. The administrative organization was completed the following year. It was named after the Spanish word for the reed that grows along the coast of the Gulf of Mexico.

According to the 2000 census , Matagorda County had 37,957 people in 13,901 households and 9,925 families. The population density was 13 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 67.83 percent white, 12.72 percent African American, 0.67 percent Native American, 2.38 percent Asian, 0.04 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 13.98 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.38 percent were descended from two or more races. 31.35 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there are 98.6 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there are 95.5 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,174 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,586. Males had a median income of $ 37,733 versus $ 21,871 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,709. 14.9 percent of families and 18.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
