The Coke County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Robert Lee .
geography
The county is located approximately 100 km northwest of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of 2,403 square kilometers, of which 76 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Nolan County , Runnels County , Tom Green County , Sterling County, and Mitchell Counties .
history
Coke County was formed in 1889 from parts of Tom Green County. It was named after Richard Coke , the 15th governor of Texas.
Two of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of October 19, 2018, the Coke County Jail and Fort Chadbourne .

According to the 2000 census , Coke County had 3,864 people in 1,544 households and 1,068 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 88.85 percent white, 1.94 percent African American, 0.78 percent Native American, 0.08 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 6.94 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.40 percent were descended from two or more races. 16.90 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,544 households, 27.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 58.4 percent were married, couples living together, 8.1 percent were single mothers and 30.8 percent were non-families. 29.0 percent were single households and 18.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.84 people.
24.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.5 percent between 18 and 24, 20.5 percent between 25 and 44, 23.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 24.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 100 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,085 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,724. Males had a median income of $ 30,778 versus $ 19,596 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,734. 9.7 percent of families and 13.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
