The Freestone County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Fairfield .

The county is east of the geographic center of Texas and has an area of 2311 square kilometers, of which 38 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Henderson County , Leon County , Limestone County, and Navarro County .
history
Freestone County was formed from parts of Limestone County on September 6, 1850, and the administrative organization was completed on July 6 of the following year. It was named after the local stone deposits.
One of the county's buildings is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of May 25, 2019, the Trinity and Brazos Valley Railroad Depot and Office Building .

According to the 2000 census , Freestone County had 17,867 people in 6,588 households and 4,664 families. The population density was 8 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.56 percent white, 18.91 percent African American, 0.37 percent Native American, 0.27 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 3.90 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 0.97 percent were descended from two or more races. 8.20 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,588 households, 30.3 percent had children or young people living with them. 56.6 percent were married couples living together, 10.7 percent were single mothers and 29.2 percent were non-families. 26.4 percent were single households and 13.7 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.98 people.
23.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 28.1 percent between 25 and 44, 23.0 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females there were 110.5 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 110.8 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,283 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,586. Males had a median income of $ 30,633 versus $ 19,214 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,338. 9.8 percent of families and 14.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
