The Houston County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Crockett . The county is one of the so-called dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in east Texas, about 90 km from the Louisiana border and has an area of ​​3,203 square kilometers, of which 15 square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Anderson County , Cherokee County , Angelina County , Trinity County , Walker County , Madison County, and Leon Counties .

history

Houston County was formed on June 12, 1837 from parts of Nacogdoches County . It was named after Samuel Houston , one of the most important characters in Texas history. Houston was a signatory to the Declaration of Independence for the Republic of Texas . During the Texan Revolution he was Commander in Chief of the Army and led it to victory in the Battle of San Jacinto . After that he was first President of the Republic of Texas, later Senator and Governor of Texas . He was removed from this post when he refused to take an oath on the Confederate States of America .

Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of November 2, 2019, including Downes-Aldrich House in addition to the Houston County Courthouse .

As of the 2000 census, Houston County's population was 23,185. Of these, 2,999 people lived in collective accommodation, the other residents lived in 8,259 households and 5,756 families. The population density was 7 people per square kilometer. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 114.1 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 115.9 males.

The median income for a household in the county is $ 28,119 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,033. Males had a median income of $ 29,143 versus $ 19,885 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,525. 15.6 percent of families and 21.0 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
