Grapeland is a city in Houston County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located 20 km north of Crockett , at the junction of US Highway 287 with Farm Road 227, in the north of the county, in east-east Texas and has a total area of 5.1 km² with no significant water surface.
history
The place first served as a mail collection point for the area and was called Grapevine until 1873. By opening a post office, the place was renamed Grapeland, as a place with the same name already existed. In 1872 the Houston and Great Northern Railroad Company moved their tracks through this area and built a railroad depot on this site. Thus the place became a freight and trading center for cotton production.
In 1936 the oil and gas production began, which was another branch of the economy. After 1945 cotton production decreased more and more and the surrounding farmers switched to peanut production. The Peanut Festival has been celebrated annually since 1945 .
Demographic data
According to the 2000 census, 1,451 people in 583 households and 377 families lived here. The population density was 282.9 inhabitants per km ². The racial the population was composed of 63.27% White, 34.94% African American, 0.62% Native American, 0.07% Asian, 0.07% Pacific Islander, and 0.83% other ethnic groups. About 0.21% were of mixed race and 1.65% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 583 households, 27.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.1% of these were married couples living together. 19.2% were single mothers and 35.2% were non-families. 34.3% of all households were single households and there were people living in 20.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 3.08.
26.4% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.1% 18 to 24, 21.2% 25 to 44, 20.7% 45 to 64, and 24.6% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 42 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 79.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 71.7 men.
The median income for a household in the 22,361 USD , and the median income for a family 30,250 USD. Males had a median income of $ 26,964 versus $ 18,906 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,736. 23.5% of the population and 20.4% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 29.2% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 19.0% were 65 or older.
