The Angelina County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Lufkin , the county's largest city. Lufkin was named after Abraham P. Lufkin , a cotton merchant and city councilor and friend of Paul Bremond , president of the Houston, East and West Texas Railway .

The county is located in east Texas between the Angelina Abdulhasani in the north and the Neches River in the south, is about 100 km from Louisiana and has an area of ​​2239 square kilometers, of which 163 square kilometers are water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Nacogdoches County , San Augustine County , Jasper County , Tyler County , Polk County , Trinity County , Houston County, and Cherokee County .

history

Angelina County was formed on April 22, 1846 from parts of Nacogdoches County. It was named after the Angelina River , the name of which goes back to a girl from the Hainai Indians who, according to Spanish legends, helped the first missionaries around 1690 to introduce other natives to the Christian faith. The Spaniards then called it "Angelina" ( German  "Little Angel" ).

The first seat of the county administration was Marion, from 1854 it was Jonesville, from 1858 Homer and from 1892 Lufkin. Angelina County is the only county in Texas named after a woman.

The Boynton-Kent House is one of 41 entries for the county in the NRHP.

According to the 2000 census , Angelina County had 80,130 people in 28,685 households and 21,255 families. The population density was 39 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.10 percent white, 14.72 percent African American, 0.30 percent Native American, 0.67 percent Asian, 0.02 percent from the Pacific island area and 7.77 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.42 percent were descended from two or more races. 14.35 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 28,685 households, 36.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 57.8 percent were married couples living together, 12.3 percent were single mothers, and 25.9 percent were non-families. 22.8 percent were single households and 9.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.70 and the average family size was 3.18 people.

27.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.7 percent between 18 and 24, 28.6 percent between 25 and 44, 21.5 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 96.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 93.7 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 33,806 , and the median income for a family is $ 39,505. Males had a median income of $ 30,373 versus $ 20,221 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,876. 12.4 percent of families and 15.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
