history
Austin County was established as the original county in 1836. It was named after Stephen Fuller Austin who started Anglo-American colonization, also known as the Father of Texas .
Moses Austin , Stephen A.'s father, received permission from the Mexican government in 1821 to establish a colony and bring 300 families to Texas. Before he could put his plan into action, he died of pneumonia and his son continued the project. The size of the land to be awarded was determined as follows: 640 acres for the head of the family, 320 acres for his wife, 160 acres for each child and 80 acres for each slave. The first German emigrants settled in 1831 and built Hermanns University in 1844 . The German settlement Cat Spring , formerly Katzenquelle, was founded in 1834. Another German settlement called Millheim was founded in 1845 and the Neu Ulm settlement in 1850 , named after the place of origin of the settlers. Also the place Bleiblerville was a German, the dealer Robert Bleibler founded.
At the beginning of the 20th century, watermelons were also grown in addition to cattle and grain cultivation. In 1924, 1,450 Melons rail cars were sold to the north of the United States. The first crude oil was found in 1915 and produced in significant quantities from 1927.
Seven buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of September 21, 2018).
