Bellville is a city in Austin County in the US state of Texas in the United States and the seat of the county seat of Austin County.

The city is located in the central southeast of Texas and has a total area of ​​6.8 km², without any significant water surface. The distance to Houston in the east is about 100 km and to the Gulf of Mexico in the southeast about 200 km. Texas State Routes 36 and 159 and Farm Roads 529, 1456 and 2429 run through the city .

The city was named after Thomas B. Bell , a settler and fellow campaigner from Stephen F. Austin's Old Three Hundred , who came to Texas in 1822 and built up the resistance in the area of ​​the later city in 1838. Some men settled here permanently and founded the town, which in 1846 became the seat of the county government. The first post office opened in 1849 and a small log cabin, which was replaced by a stable building in 1850, temporarily served as a courthouse. In 1854 the first stone courthouse was built and a year later the town had a market square with several shops around it.

In the following years, the city grew only slowly, until in the winter of 1879-80 the Gulf, Colorado and Santa Fe Railroad moved their rails here. In the next 4 months the population grew from 300 to 522 residents and the wooden buildings were gradually replaced by large stone buildings in the Victorian style. By 1884, Bellville had two churches, two hotels, a bakery, three saloons, twelve general stores, a public school, and two weekly newspapers: the Bellville Standard and the Austin County Times, and the town became the region's cotton center by 1898 8,600 loaded bales of cotton peaked.

By 1885 the city had a population of around 1,000, the majority being German immigrants, and both English and German were taught in schools. In 1891 the Bellville Wochenblatt appeared for the first time in German. During this time the Bellville Gymnastics Club Pavilion was built.

In 1914 Bellville had two banks, an ice cream factory, and telegraph and telephone lines. A year later there were the first oil discoveries and the city grew to 2000 inhabitants. During the Great Depression and until the end of World War II, the population fell to around 1,300. The old population of 1915 was not reached again until the mid- 1950s and by 1990 had grown to 3378 inhabitants.

Demographics

According to the 2000 census, 3,794 people in 1,425 households and 966 families lived here. The population density was 561 inhabitants per km². The racial the population was composed of 81.9% White, 11.7% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.3% Asian, and 4.0% from other races; about 1.7% were from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race was 12.0% of the population.

Of the 1,425 households, 34.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 52.6% of these were married couples living together. 11.6% were single mothers and 32.2% were non-families. 27.9% of all households were single households and there were people living in 15.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.52 and the average family size was 3.11.

26.4% of the population were under 18 years old, 8.3% 18 to 24, 25.3% 25 to 44, 20.2% 45 to 64, and 19.7% were 65 years or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 90.9 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 85.1 men.

The median income for a household in the 40,806 US $ , and the median income for a family $ 49,730. Males had a median income of $ 36,719 versus $ 21,685 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,671. 8.0% of the population and 4.5% of families are below the poverty line. 7.9% of these were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 8.1% were 65 or older.
