The Brooks County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Falfurrias .
geography
The county is located south-southeast of the geographic center of Texas, about 70 km north of the Mexican border and 60 km west of the Gulf of Mexico . It has an area of 2444 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Jim Wells County , Kleberg County , Kenedy County , Hidalgo County , Starr County , Jim Hogg County, and Duval Counties .
history
Brooks County was formed from parts of Starr County on March 11, 1911 and the administrative organization was completed the following year. It was named after John Abijah Brooks (1855-1944), a Texas ranger and member of the House of Representatives from Texas .
One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of October 2, 2018, the Brooks County Courthouse .

As of the 2000 census , Brooks County had 7,976 people in 2,711 households and 2,079 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 75.84 percent white, 0.19 percent African American, 0.46 percent Native American, 0.09 percent Asian, 0.08 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 21.58 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.77 percent were descended from two or more races. 91.57 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,711 households, 38.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 52.2 percent were married couples living together, 19.1 percent were single mothers, and 23.3 percent were non-families. 21.4 percent were single households and 11.3 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.92 and the average family size was 3.38 people.
31.6 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.9 percent between 18 and 24, 23.4 percent between 25 and 44, 21.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 89.9 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $ 18,622 , and the median income for a family was $ 22,473. Males had a median income of $ 23,051 versus $ 16,103 for females. The per capita income was $ 10,234. 36.9 percent of families and 40.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
