The Schleicher County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is Eldorado .
geography
The county is located about 40 km east of the geographic center of Texas, is 60 km south of Mexico and has an area of 3,395 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Tom Green Counties , Menard Counties , Sutton Counties , Crockett Counties , and Irion Counties .
history
Schleicher County was formed in 1887 from parts of Crockett County. It was named after Gustav Schleicher , an early engineer, surveyor, and lawyer in Texas.

According to the 2000 census , there were 2,935 people in 1,115 households and 817 families in Schleicher County. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 76.59 percent white, 1.53 percent African American, 0.07 percent Native American, 0.17 percent Asian, 0.03 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 18.98 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.62 percent were descended from two or more races. 43.54 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 1,115 households, 34.3 percent had children or young people living with them. 62.6 percent were married couples living together, 7.5 percent were single mothers and 26.7 percent were non-families. 25.4 percent were single households and 12.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.12 people.
27.9 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 7.3 percent between 18 and 24, 24.0 percent between 25 and 44, 24.4 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 98.8 males and for every 100 females age 18 or older there were 94.9 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,746 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,813. Males had a median income of $ 28,412 versus $ 22,250 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,969. 16.0 percent of families and 21.5 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
