The Bailey County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Muleshoe . The county is part of the dry counties , which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

The county is located in northwest Texas on the border with New Mexico and has an area of 2,143 square kilometers, of which 2 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Parmer County , Lamb County , Hockley County , Cochran County .
history
Bailey County was formed from parts of Bexar County on August 21, 1876 , and the administrative organization ended in 1917. It was named after Peter James Bailey III. (1812–1836), a soldier who died at the Battle of the Alamo .

As of the 2000 census , Bailey County had 6,594 people in 2,348 households and 1,777 families. The population density was 3 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 66.68 percent white, 1.27 percent African American, 0.65 percent Native American, 0.14 percent Asian and 28.60 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.65 percent were descended from two or more races. 47.30 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 2,348 households, 37.1 percent had children or young people living with them. 64.9 percent were married couples living together, 7.5 percent were single mothers, and 24.3 percent were non-families. 22.3 percent were single households and 12.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.78 and the average family size was 3.28 people.
30.3 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24, 24.7 percent between 25 and 44, 21.2 percent between 45 and 64, and 15.2 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females there were 96 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 94.1 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,901 , and the median income for a family is $ 32,898. Males had a median income of $ 25,150 versus $ 18,309 for females. The per capita income was $ 12,979. 13.5 percent of families and 16.7 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
