The Howard County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Big Spring .
geography
The county is located northwest of the geographic center of Texas and about 90 km to the west from New Mexico . It has an area of 2342 square kilometers, of which four square kilometers are water. It is bordered by counties in a clockwise direction: Borden County , Mitchell County , Sterling County , Glasscock County, and Martin County .
history
Howard County was formed on August 21, 1876 from parts of Bexar County . The administrative organization was completed on June 15, 1882. It was named after Volney Howard , who was a member of the House of Representatives for Texas from 1849 to 1853 . Howard was wounded in a duel with Hiram Runnels in 1840 . After serving in Congress in Washington, DC , he was a district attorney and judge in Los Angeles .
Two structures in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of November 4, 2019, including the Settles Hotel .

According to the 2000 census , Howard County had 33,627 people; 11,389 households and 7,949 families were counted. The population density was 14 inhabitants per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 80.14 percent white, 4.13 percent African American, 0.59 percent Native American, 0.59 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 12.43 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 2.10 percent were descended from two or more races. 37.46 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 11,389 households, 32.8 percent had children or young people living with them. 53.3 percent were married couples living together, 12.2 percent were single mothers and 30.2 percent were non-families. 26.8 percent were single households and 13.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.07 people.
24.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.0 percent between 18 and 24, 30.9 percent between 25 and 44, 21.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 14.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 118 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 122.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,805 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,262. Males had a median income of $ 28,971 versus $ 21,390 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,027. 14.5 percent of families and 18.6 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
