history
From 1856 this area was populated by ranchers and the small village was called Nesterville . In 1880 the village had a general store and 132 residents. In 1906 the rancher 'Samuel Burk Burnett' sold an area of 65 km 2 to the Wichita Falls and Northwestern Railway so that they could move their rails to Oklahoma and Kansas . The first post office was opened a year later. In 1905 the small town was renamed Burkburnett by President Theodore Roosevelt , who was here to hunt wolves and stayed with the rancher Burnett.
After the first oil discovery in 1912, the population rose rapidly to around 20,000 in 1918. During the Great Depression the number fell to a few thousand and in 1936 the place had only 3281 inhabitants. It wasn't until Sheppard Air Force Base was built in 1941 that the city recovered.
An article in Cosmopolitan entitled: A Lady Comes to Burkburnett was the inspiration for the 1940 film Bomm Town, which starred Spencer Tracy and Clark Gable .
