history

In 1535 the Spaniards reached today's Presidio for the first time as part of the expedition of Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca , where there was a pueblo that Cabeza de Vaca called La Junta de las Cruces. In the following centuries the place got several different Spanish names. Around 1760 the first Spanish settlers settled in the place and a garrison of about 60 men was stationed in the place. In 1830 the place was named Presidio del Norte. The first Texan settlers settled in the area in 1848. In 1849 and 1850, two raids by the Comanches brought the place into considerable trouble. A post office was set up in 1868, there was a school in the place from 1887. In 1930, the place received a railway connection over the route of the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway. Presidio received city rights in 1981.
