Travis Dermott (born December 22, 1996 in Newmarket , Ontario ) is a Canadian ice hockey player who has been under contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs from the National Hockey League since July 2015, where he plays the position of defender .
Career
Travis Dermott played in his youth for the Newmarket Hurricanes from his hometown. In 2012, the Erie Otters selected him in the Priority Selection of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL) in 164th position, before he moved permanently to the team at the beginning of the 2013/14 season. In his first OHL season, the defender scored 28 points in 67 games and was subsequently elected to the league's First All-Rookie Team . He increased this performance the following year significantly to 45 points, while he reached the playoff final for the J. Ross Robertson Cup with the Otters , but there was defeated by the Oshawa Generals . He was then considered in the NHL Entry Draft 2015 in 34th place by the Toronto Maple Leafs , who provided him with an entry contract a little later . For now, however, the Canadian returned to Erie for another season, where he was appointed to the OHL Second All-Star Team .
At the end of the 2015/16 season, Dermott switched to the organization of the Maple Leafs and made his professional debut in a playoff game of their farm team , the Toronto Marlies , in the American Hockey League (AHL). With the Marlies, the defender was active for almost a year and a half until he made his debut for the Maple Leafs in the National Hockey League (NHL) in January 2018 and initially established himself in their squad. For the AHL playoffs, however, he returned to the Marlies and subsequently won the Calder Cup with the team . With the beginning of the 2018/19 season he finally established himself in the NHL squad of the Maple Leafs.
International
At the international level, Dermott took part with the Canadian U20 national team in the U20 World Cup in 2016 and finished sixth there with the team.
