The Gray County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Pampas .

The county is located north of the geographic center of Texas in the Texas Panhandle , is 80 km to the north, 40 km to the east of Oklahoma , and covers an area of 2407 square kilometers, of which 3 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Roberts County , Wheeler County , Donley County, and Carson County .
history
Gray County was formed in 1876 from parts of Bexar County . It was named after Peter W. Gray , a judge on the Supreme Court of Texas and a member of the State Legislature .
Eight buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of June 5, 2019).

As of the 2000 census , Gray County had 22,744 people in 8,793 households and 6,049 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.15 percent white, 5.85 percent African American, 0.94 percent Native American, 0.39 percent Asian and 8.25 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.42% were of mixed race. 13.01% of the population had Spanish or Latin American ancestors.
Of the 8,793 households, 30.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 57.0 percent were married couples living together, 9.0 percent were single mothers and 31.2 percent were non-families. 28.7 percent were single households and 15.3 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.93 people.
24.0 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.4 percent between 18 and 24, 27.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 18.1 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females there were 104 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 103.7 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 31,368 , and the median income for a family is $ 40,019. Males had a median income of $ 32,401 versus $ 20,158 for females. The per capita income was $ 16,702. 11.2 percent of families and 13.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
