Pampa is the county capital and seat of the county seat of Gray County in the US state of Texas in the United States .
geography
The city is located in the north of Texas, in the so-called Texas Panhandle in the northwest of the county, at the intersection of US Highway 60 with Highways 70, 152 and 273 and has a total area of 22.6 km 2 without any significant water surface.
history
The city's founding dates back to 1887 when the Southern Kansas Railway established a railroad station here. The first resident was Thomas H. Lane , a railway foreman of this section, who settled here with his family. The place was first called Glasgow and then Sutton . The place got the name pampas because the area was similar to the pampas in Argentina.

According to the 2000 census, 17,887 people in 7,387 households and 5,074 families lived here. The population density was 791.1 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 83.69% White, 3.85% African American, 1.07% Native American, 0.41% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, and 8.22% other ethnic groups. About 2.73% were mixed race and 13.72% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,387 households, 30.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 55.9% of these were married couples living together. 9.8% were single mothers and 31.3% were non-families. 28.8% of all households were single households and there were people living in 15.3% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.39 and the average family size was 2.94.
25.9% of the population were under 18 years old, 7.4% 18 to 24, 25.4% 25 to 44, 22.6% 45 to 64, and 18.7% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 91.0 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 86.8 men.
The median income for a household in the 31,213 USD , and the median income for a family 39,810 USD. Males had a median income of $ 32,717 versus $ 20,492 for females. The per capita income was $ 17,791. 14.8% of the population and 12.1% of families are below the poverty line. 19.7% of these were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 9.4% were 65 or older.
