Palestine is a city in Anderson County in the US state of Texas in the United States . The county seat is also located in the city .
geography
The city is located in east Texas, at the junction of US Highways 79 and 287 in the center of the county, about 180 km southeast of Dallas , 230 km north of Houston and has a total area of 46.3 km 2 , of which 0.5 km 2 of water is.
economy
The most important employer is the Texas Department of Criminal Justice , which employs over 3,900 people, and a Wal-Mart freight center with around 1,600 employees.
history
The city was named after Palestine , Illinois , the place of origin of the first settlers. In January 2003, Palestine was one of the places where some debris from the crashed space shuttle "Columbia" fell.

According to the 2000 census, 17,598 people lived here in 6,641 households and 4,582 families. The population density was 383.9 people per km 2 . The racial the population was composed of 64.60% White, 24.77% African American, 0.49% Native American, 0.79% Asian, 0.07% Pacific islander, and 7.90% non-American ethnic groups. About 1.37% were of mixed race and 14.88% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,641 households, 34.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 47.2% of these were married couples living together. 18.0% were single mothers and 31.0% were non-families. 28.0% of all households were single households and there were people living in 13.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.13.
29.1% of the population were under 18 years old, 9.2% 18 to 24, 25.6% 25 to 44, 20.0% 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older . The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females of all age groups, there were 84.8 males. For every 100 women aged 18 and over there were 78.2 men.
The median income for a household in the city is $ 30,497 , and the median income for a family is $ 35,806. Males had a median income of $ 28,331 versus $ 20,662 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,514. 20.7% of the population and 16.6% of families are below the poverty line. Of these, 27.7% were children and adolescents under 18 years of age and 14.6% were 65 or older.
